Description of anisotropic material response of wire and arc additively manufactured thin-walled stainless steel elements

In contrast to conventionally-produced structural steel and stainless elements, wire arc additively manufactured (WAAM) elements can exhibit a strongly anisotropic material response. To investigate this behaviour, data obtained from tensile tests on machined as-built coupons extracted WAAM sheets are analysed. The observed mechanical response in the elastic range is described accurately using an orthotropic plane stress model requiring definition of two Young’s moduli, Poisson’s ratio shear modulus. inelastic range, anisotropy captured through Hill yield criterion, utilising 0.2% proof stresses three different loading directions relative deposition direction; plastic ratios also reported. presented findings constitutive description highlight significant variation properties studied with direction, which opens up opportunities enhance performance structures by optimising both location orientation printed material.
